Oceanside: City Becoming a Top Pick for Event Promoters

October 11th, 2011

By RAY HUARD rhuard@nctimes.com | Posted: Monday, October 10, 2011 5:30 am

Oceanside has gained a name for itself as the home of the California Ironman 70.3 triathlon, the Southern California Beach Soccer championship, the starting point for the Race Across America cross-country bicycle trek and a slew of smaller events and competitions.

The collection of popular sports festivals shows the city is a rising star among special-event promoters, but it wasn’t always so.

In the 1980s, when the city was hungry for major tournaments and other events to draw tourists, Oceanside had to offer incentives such as free extra police protection or free standby ambulances, city special-events coordinator Terry Goodman recalled last week.

“Now, it’s kind of almost the opposite, where people see us as a very valuable venue,” Goodman said. “We’re also getting a lot more interest in corporate parties and things like that. With our amphitheater right on the beach next to the pier, it’s got a fantastic view. You just don’t get that a lot of places.”

Since 2004, the city has gone from hosting four regional or national sporting events to 11 last year with more on the way, Goodman said.

“We could easily host a major event every weekend if we wanted to,” Goodman said.

The director of one of the city’s bigger events, the Ironman 70.3 triathlon held in March, said she has three events she’d like to add to the city’s roster, including a new triathlon already in the planning stages for October 2012.
