San Diego Botanic Garden

Friday, January 27th, 2012
Lavender2 200x300 San Diego Botanic Garden

Benjamin Lavender's "Bulbous" sculpture

During your beachfront vacation, don’t miss the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Just a short drive from your vacation rental, explore and enjoy the four miles of garden trails, beautiful views, flowering trees and the nation’s largest bamboo collection.

The Garden boasts exhibits, a Bird and Butterfly Garden, and even the Hamilton Children’s Garden, the largest interaction children’s garden on the West Coast.

For something different, why not take a class?  The garden hosts a variety of classes on most Saturdays, such as “Designing with Native Plants” and a Succulent Wreath class.  There are even garden-to-table cooking classes, and a Bird Watching group that meets the first Monday of every month! Check out the full list and sign up here.

Through April, 2012, the Sculpture in the Garden Exhibit features sculptures from 26 regional artists, installed against the background of the beautifully lush 37-acre gardens.  This is the fourth consecutive year the Garden has hosted the popular exhibit.  Many of this year’s artists are returning from previous years, bringing a wide variety of pieces with them.  Artists include Benjamin Lavender, John Rawlinson, Lia Strell and many more.

The unique experience of perusing a “Phantom Gallery” – a gallery exhibition of artwork integrated temporarily into a on-gallery venue – is not one you’ll soon forget!   Fteague 73 300x196 San Diego Botanic Garden

The San Diego Botanic Garden is open 9:00am to 5:00pm daily, and until 8:00pm on Thursdays during the summer.  Don’t miss it!

Oceanside: City Becoming a Top Pick for Event Promoters

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

By RAY HUARD rhuard@nctimes.com | Posted: Monday, October 10, 2011 5:30 am

Oceanside has gained a name for itself as the home of the California Ironman 70.3 triathlon, the Southern California Beach Soccer championship, the starting point for the Race Across America cross-country bicycle trek and a slew of smaller events and competitions.

The collection of popular sports festivals shows the city is a rising star among special-event promoters, but it wasn’t always so.

In the 1980s, when the city was hungry for major tournaments and other events to draw tourists, Oceanside had to offer incentives such as free extra police protection or free standby ambulances, city special-events coordinator Terry Goodman recalled last week.

“Now, it’s kind of almost the opposite, where people see us as a very valuable venue,” Goodman said. “We’re also getting a lot more interest in corporate parties and things like that. With our amphitheater right on the beach next to the pier, it’s got a fantastic view. You just don’t get that a lot of places.”

Since 2004, the city has gone from hosting four regional or national sporting events to 11 last year with more on the way, Goodman said.

“We could easily host a major event every weekend if we wanted to,” Goodman said.

The director of one of the city’s bigger events, the Ironman 70.3 triathlon held in March, said she has three events she’d like to add to the city’s roster, including a new triathlon already in the planning stages for October 2012.
